Newt Gingrich
Full Name: Newton Leroy Gingrich
D.O.B.: June 17, 1943
Offices Held: Media gadfly and sometimes lobbyist (1999- ), Georgia congressman (1979-1999), Speaker of the House, (1995-1999), House Minority Whip (1989-1995)
Why He'll Win: More than a decade after he resigned the Speakership, Gingrich remains as popular as ever among Republicans, who will always appreciate how much of a pain in the ass he was to Bill Clinton. Really, Gingrich is just a big, fat, walking piece of '90s nostalgia; a reminder of a time when budgets were balanced, the president was white, and Seinfeld and Friends were still on the air. Yet somehow, in a party that espouses the virtues of marriage and family, Gingrich has remained popular, despite burning through a succession of wives at the rate most people go through shoes.
Why He'll Lose: Outside of conservative columnists and ditto-heads, no one really likes Newt Gingrich. For some reason, Gingrich's mad pursuit of a Democratic president for porking an intern while he, himself, was sleeping with a House staffer never sat well with most Americans. And as it's been over a decade since Gingrich was elected to anything, voters could opt for a fresher face over a candidate who smells like he's been sitting on the shelf past his sell-by date.
